Tailgate trim removal 1968 el camino1/10/2024 It isn't as much from truck enthusiasts or Home Depot types as I expected. I get a lot of attention in traffic and in public. I never would have thought that an old El Camino would have the potential to be such a rewarding road car. ![]() There is no funny weight/balance consideration due to the car being a 2-door station wagon with the back window moved forward. It corners at least as well as my modified 2nd gen Camaro Z28, is very neutral, and is an absolute blast to drive. The body shop bill would have been roughly $4,000, but I managed to save slightly over 3/4 of that by doing the work myself.ĭriving my Elco with modern suspension and steering and brakes brought a huge surprise as to how well it actually can handle and drive. For that reason it took longer, but in the end the job was done much better because by gathering 3 other rust-free roofs I was able to rebuild the entire structure inside and out with perfect metal, rather than just simply re-skinning over the rusty inner structure. That would be solely due to the non-availability of new/repop 2nd gen Elco steel for the roof area. The hardest part about "restoring" my Elco has to be the work I did on the roof. Doing it with an Elco just grinds their defeat into their memory all the more deeply. They are not the magic engines that Hemi-worshippers would have you believe. He changed his tune real fast when I turned off his radio. phony-fake-fraudulent) Hemi Belvedere parked next to me was smiling politely and condescendingly at my car until I lifted the hood, and then he glared and shut up. One guy walked away telling his companion that my car has a Hemi in it. It bugs know-it-alls at cruise nights when I totally ignore their questions as to why I have wires going into my breather tank. This way you can reference to the part and what you need. The elcamino store also has a lot of the parts with photos to see what you are looking at. Good photos on the East Coast Chevelle pages of the parts. Oh and alot of our sponsors here carry the parts. ![]() You can use the one piece floor pans with rockers and all, but you just have to add 4in to the rockers to get to the end, Not that bad as to what it could be. Not many but a few are (take it when you can get it). And some of the elcamino parts are cheeper than the chevelle parts. There is only a few Elcamino parts that are specific to the vehicle which I mentioned above. The cost of the sheetmetel is about the same, most parts minus the quarters, tailgate, roof, door skins, bed, and inner bed pieces is all chevelle. The good news is that I have lots of friends with skills and they are more than willing to help.I have to help with the beer and steak funds:beers: but hey small price if I want it done right and my way. ![]() As of right now, it is everything, cowl, cowl shoulders, firewall, entire floorboard, roof, rear panel, smugglers box lid, bed sides, tailgate, and quarters.Oh and I forgot the fenders, and rad support. On this same topic, I am in the process of tearing mine down to see what needs to be replaced. Click to expand.Yea, we make them jealous cause we have a traveling bed and we can use it :beers: (take it however you want to on that statement)
